Aberdeen condemns fans who ‘abandoned’ the club with Tannadice incidents

The Dons’ teenage winger Ryan Duncan narrowly escaped being hit by a pyrotechnic device thrown onto the pitch by a traveling supporter, while United manager and ex-Dons boss Jim Goodwin was reportedly hit by rockets from the away game.

Goodwin later said he was “extremely disappointed” after being targeted by “those few idiots” during his first game in charge of his new club. The 41-year-old left his post at Pittodrie at the end of January after dismal results and was verbally taunted during his side’s 3-1 Premiership defeat.

Aberdeen says they are now working with United and Police Scotland to identify those responsible and warned those responsible are being “dealt with”. A club statement released on Sunday night also urged fans to continue giving “fantastic” support to their side without endangering others.

The statement said: “The traveling support at Tannadice on Saturday night was impressive in both numbers and voice. Our form away from home has been disappointing this season so it’s been an incredible turnout from Dons fans and everyone at the club is very grateful for the continued support and huge support.

“Unfortunately, a handful of these have tarnished the reputation of this amazing support. They failed the club and themselves. Numerous pyrotechnic devices were detonated and hurled onto the pitch – one narrowly missing Ryan Duncan. It was reported that several objects were also thrown in Jim Goodwin’s direction.

“Investigations have started and we are working with Dundee United FC and Police Scotland. If the culprits are identified, both the club and the authorities will take action against them.

“Our request to this minority is to continue to provide the team with the fantastic support we are known for, but in a safe and respectful manner that does not compromise the health or safety of players, staff or your fellow supporters. ”
