Aaron Rodgers denies shirt swap after loss to Lions as speculation about retirement begins

The Green Bay Packers, who needed just one more win to make the playoffs, were defeated 20-16 by division rivals Detroit Lions Sunday night at Lambeau Field.

As the Lions celebrated, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers took the field to congratulate him before heading to the locker room.

But he had an interesting exchange with rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams, who wanted to swap shirts with Rodgers.

Swapping jerseys at the end of a game is fairly commonplace in the NFL.

Though he’s done it with other players in the past, Rodgers was heard saying, “I’m going to stick with this one.”

It could be nothing, or it could be something, but speculation about Rodgers’ future in Green Bay is sure to be heating up now.

Not only could that exchange be heard, but Rodgers’ body language after the game was interesting to watch. He walked slowly off the field and looked at the stands like he was drinking at the moment.

Randall Cobb, his longtime friend and teammate, also walked him through the tunnel towards the dressing room, they both hugged and talked.

This isn’t the first time Rodgers’ future with the team has been raised.

Rodgers signed a three-year, $150 million contract with the Packers last offseason that would see him through the 2026 season at the age of 43. However, his contract includes options for 2023 and 2024.

Because of this, reporters have pestered Rodgers with what he wants to do after this season, but he hasn’t moved to give a definitive answer.

While Rodgers hasn’t indicated he wants to leave, he also hasn’t denied rumors that he will be moving to a new team with Green Bay for the first time since his promotion to the league in 2005.

PACKERS’ AARON RODGERS ON POTENTIAL LAST GAME AT LAMBEAU FIELD: ‘NOT AS GRATITUDE’

If this were his last game as a Packer, Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer, would leave with four All-Pros and 10 Pro Bowl selections, as well as four MVP trophies and a Super Bowl ring from 2011, where he was also MVP in this competition.

Rodgers parted with a 147-75-1 record with 475 total touchdowns along the way in his 18 years with the Packers.

But again, who knows? Rodgers could add to those totals next season.

Rodgers failed to pull off that game-winning drive like he has so many times in the past in games like this Sunday night, intercepting Lions safety Kerby Joseph after Detroit went 20-16 ahead of Jamaal Williams’ second touchdown of the night.

Jared Goff and the Lions offense did what they had to do by killing time and thwarting their win to play spoilers.

While the Lions were already out of the playoffs, they sent the Seattle Seahawks to the big dance next weekend.
