A small crash turns into a three-car collision, killing two

CROWN POINT, Indiana (WANE) — Two drivers are dead after a wrong-way collision on I-65 Saturday afternoon.

According to Indiana State Police, around 12:00 p.m., Lowell Troopers were dispatched to an SUV traveling in the south lanes of I-65 near the exit at US 231 northbound. Minutes later, an accident involving multiple vehicles was reported. Crown Point Fire, Police and Troopers were the first to respond to the scene. There they found that the SUV was driving in the wrong direction and, as a result, “collided head-on with another vehicle”. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Another vehicle hit the SUV after it collided, resulting in a three-car collision. The third driver suffered “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the ISP.

A press release said Master Trooper Russell Hayes had conducted a preliminary investigation showing that a black 2015 Chevrolet Equinox was involved in a “minor accident” on the Family Express on US 231. The Equinox fled the scene, entered I-65 the wrong way, and hit the second driver head-on.

The identification of those involved will be made by the Lake County Coroner at a later date.
