8th Annual CureDuchenne Napa Wine Auction in Newport – Orange County Register
CureDuchenne and Winzerstuhl/Kultweingut Dana Estates are hosting the eighth annual Napa in Newport Wine Auction on Saturday, October 29th. This year the event is leaving Newport for a new venue: the opulent Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point will provide the backdrop for the Napa in Newport event.
The evening raises funds and awareness for the search for a cure for Duchenne, which is one of the most common and severe forms of muscular dystrophy. Duchenne is caused by mutations in the gene that codes for dystrophin, a protein that muscles need to function properly. It’s also 100 percent lethal.
“We’ve made great strides in Duchenne research, and funding is critical,” said Huntington Beach native Debra Miller, Founder and CEO of CureDuchenne. “We are extremely grateful to our winemakers, sponsors and attendees who support this event and bring us one step closer to a cure.” When Miller’s son Hawken was diagnosed with Duchenne, she and her husband Paul founded the organization. The event became a way for the family to raise awareness and build community in Orange County and beyond.
On October 29, guests will sip wines produced by more than 45 Napa Valley winemakers. The evening continues with a grand tasting dinner prepared by David Shim, Executive Chef at Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse Cote. Both Cote locations in New York and Miami boast Michelin stars, where Shim’s notable dishes, like a kimchi wagyu paella and Cote’s butcher’s feast with banchan and two types of stew, revolutionized the Korean steakhouse experience. The benefit evening begins with a live auction of collectable wines and “Once Upon a Time Experiences”.
“We are very honored to serve as Vintner Chair this year,” added Jae Chun, President of Dana Estates. “’Dana’ is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘the spirit of generosity’. In this spirit, we come together to raise funds for a great cause and to witness the hope that comes from helping fund research that may ultimately lead to a cure.”
Over the years, the event has raised more than $9 million for CureDuchenne.
“Seven years ago my husband and I visited Napa in Newport because of the amazing list of wineries and guest chef,” said Diane Kemple, co-chair of the event. “Now I’m co-chairing this incredible event because of the impact CureDuchenne has made on so many lives.”
Since CureDuchenne’s inception in 2003, the organization has raised more than $50 million for research. It also funded 16 research projects that have progressed to human clinical trials. The organization has grown into a global leader in research, patient care and innovation to extend and improve the lives of people living with Duchenne.
