8 rescued by Evanston fire after several boats capsized on Lake Michigan

EVANSTON, Illinois — All boaters are being considered after several boats capsized on Lake Michigan Thursday after a sudden change in weather and conditions.

Around 5 p.m., the Evanston Fire Department responded to calls from several capsized boats in the Clark Street Beach and Dempster Street Boat Launch area. Arriving firefighters saw five overturned boats. The Evanston Fire Department launched an immediate full-water rescue operation.

Divers then pulled eight people out of the water. None required additional medical treatment.

A Chicago Fire Department helicopter unit assisted in the search.
