A 26-year-old driver was behind bars on Saturday after striking and killing a three-year-old girl in Westminster on Friday night, January 6, authorities said.
The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. at Goldenwest Street and 21st Street, Commander Kevin MacCormick said.
The driver was turning south from West 21st Street toward Goldenwest in his Mini Cooper when he failed to yield to the girl and her family, who investigators believe were legally crossing Goldenwest with a green walk signal, MacCormick said.
The intersection has no turn arrows for eastbound or westbound drivers turning onto Goldenwest Street.
As the family crossed the street, the girl ran from her mother and two other children, the commander said.
The girl was taken to Orange County Children’s Hospital, but she died.
Police arrested Westminster driver Bautista Decastilla after investigators spoke to him at the police station, MacCormick said. Investigators also planned to go to nearby businesses to pull surveillance footage.
Decastilla was jailed on suspicion of manslaughter and driving without a license, the commandant said.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
