3 Mississippi officers have taken paid leave after a man died in custody

Three police officers in the Mississippi capital have been placed on paid leave after a man died in custody.

The Jackson Police Department said in a press release on Wednesday that the incident happened at a home in north Jackson on Saturday night. Officers took into custody a man who was experiencing a “medical emergency.”

American Medical Response was called to the home, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating what happened and the Jackson Police Department has launched an internal investigation. The police department identified the officers involved as Avery Willis, Kenya McCarty and James Land.

“The loss of life is always tragic and we remain committed to transparency,” Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said in a separate statement on Wednesday. “At this time we have no further comments as we allow the investigation to proceed.”
