24,639 new cases reported during long Orange County holiday weekend – Orange County Register

The OC Health Care Agency reported 24,639 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, January 18, bringing the cumulative total since tracking began in the county to 455,314. Counts are counted from Saturday to Tuesday, and average around 6,159 cases per day during the long holiday weekend.

On Tuesday, 1,197 people were reported hospitalized with COVID-19 in Orange County, including 199 patients in the intensive care unit. That is an increase of 43 people hospitalized from Friday.

One year ago, on January 18, Orange County had 2,026 people hospitalized with coronavirus. The peak was on January 7, with 2,259 patients.

Orange County’s COVID-19 dashboard updates the percentage of hospitalizations by immunization status on Thursdays, and 86% of those hospitalized were unvaccinated. This is down 1% from two weeks ago when 522 people were hospitalized on January 1. Of those in the ICU with coronavirus, 87% had not been vaccinated.

The county reported 17 more deaths as of Tuesday, bringing the virus death toll in Orange County to 5,938.

Data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or collected through case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on January 9.

Of the 5,938 deaths reported from the virus, 1,225 were residents of skilled nursing facilities, 647 were in assisted living facilities, two were OC prisoners, and 19 were listed. is homeless.

An estimated 319,027 people have recovered from the disease. The number of people who have recovered is based on the previous 28 days of cumulative cases.

The data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials stressed. More information may be available as individual case investigations are completed.
