24 Hour Coin Operated Laundry Near Me: The World’s Largest Laundromat in Berwyn, IL has a bird aviary, Santa’s Village, pizza nights and more!

BERWYN, Ill.– Doing laundry can be a really boring task.
But not in the largest laundromat in the world! The giant coin-operated washing facility in Berwyn, Illinois is more than 13,000 square feet and has more than 300 machines. You will never come here and you will not find a washer and dryer.
An aviary, community raffles for kids, pizza nights, costume contests and a Santa Claus Village are just a few of the features you’ll find at the world’s largest laundromat. And since it’s open and staffed 24 hours a day, you can easily find 50+ people and staff at any time of the night.
Owned by Tom Benson, the laundromat earned the title of ‘Largest in the World’ under its previous owner in 1982. The Coin Laundry Association held a national competition to see which laundromat is the largest. Almost 20 years later, in 1999, Benson bought it and tried to really put it on the map.
In 2004, however, disaster struck. A fire broke out in the store and completely destroyed the building. Insurance companies told Benson that the building was completely gone, but he wasn’t ready to go out of business. So he spent the next few years meeting interior designers, mechanics and architects to completely rebuild and reinvent the world’s largest laundromat.
Today, the laundromat offers customers plenty of space to sit, relax, fold laundry, or meet up with friends for a homework session.
Benson also pledged to serve the Berwyn community. He said he would be nothing without the loyalty of his customers and dedicated employees. He always tries to ensure that his associates not only look like the community they serve, but are members of the community since Berwyn’s population is primarily Hispanic. Benson said most of his employees live less than two miles from the store, and because of the family atmosphere he tries to create, most stay with the company for more than 10 years.
Benson and his family were an active part of Berwyn, hosting the annual fireworks show and an annual bicycle raffle for school children. Right next to the laundromat, he even had a street named after him.
“This place is about community,” Benson said. “We have set ourselves a high bar and do not want to disappoint anyone. We want to be a laundromat that takes care of everyone’s needs.”
