2019 Alex Guajardo Murder Trial: No decision yet to change location from Harris County for man accused of murdering pregnant woman

HARRIS COUNTY, TX (KTRK) — After two days of testimony, including Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, a decision has not yet been made on the motion to change jurisdiction for a murder trial.

The alleged murder happened back in 2019. At that time, Alex Guajardo was accused of stabbing his pregnant wife Caitlynne to death.

At the time of the alleged murder, Guajardo was on a personal acknowledgment statement for allegedly beating his wife.

His defense team argued that the prosecutor’s office made him the “poster child” for bail reform and the amount of publicity the case received was so extensive that he would not get a fair trial here.

In Thursday’s closing arguments, the defense said the prosecutor’s office “cares about their message, not the open case” and that his client deserved a fair trial without Ogg’s interference.

It’s rare to see a prosecutor on the stand. However, Ogg testified again for more than three hours on Wednesday and Thursday. She said she believed the defendant could be fairly tried at this location. While on the witness stand, she said that since that murder, more than 1,400 homicides have been filed in Harris County.

Prosecutors also argued that there have been several cases in recent years more spectacular than this one in which a proper jury has been assembled.

At the conclusion of the two-day hearing, Judge Amy Martin said she was not yet making a decision on the request to change the venue and would review the hearing transcripts.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 17th.
