$1.2 billion jackpot sends locals to stores to buy Powerball tickets – Orange County Register

The sign at Bay Liquor in Seal Beach didn’t have enough space to show the amount to which a jackpot rose in the multi-state Powerball game on Wednesday, November 2nd.

The $999 million cap sign fell short of the estimated $1.2 billion jackpot a ticket with all six numbers would win — it’s the fourth-biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, after 38th consecutive draw with no tickets matching all six numbers sold on Monday.

Local businesses have seen hopefuls come in to buy tickets throughout the day.

It’s been a year full of big jackpots; in July, the Mega Millions had a jackpot of $1.337 billion.

The US Lottery’s record jackpot is $1.586 billion for the January 23, 2016 Powerball draw. The second largest is $1.537 billion for the October 23, 2018 Mega Millions draw.

According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the game, there is a 1 in 293 million chance of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number.
